AK MATTHEWS

Design director.
Culture shifter.
Total mom.

I'm AK Matthews, Design director and culture shifter. I’m a people-first leader dedicated to creating psychologically safe, innovative environments built on trust, continuous improvement, and exceptional standards.

My expertise lies in adapting to strategic shifts, diverse working styles and processes to move teams forward and change course when needed. Adaptation to ambiguity is my love language; navigating complex challenges is my superpower.

I've built a decade+ long career working, SCHEMING, AND DREAMING, alongside WORLD CLASS PARTNERS at some incredible places.

Currently, I lead and scale high-performing platform design teams at Square with a sharp focus on trust and seller identities. I bring an outcome-driven perspective with thoughtful decision-making to strategic discussions with my cross-functional partners. I've been told that I am a thoughtful, supportive collaborator, an expert listener, a facilitator of organizational vision, and a good troublemaker—descriptions I won't challenge and take very seriously.

Driven by strong “why is this like this?” energy, my approach to leadership follows a core set of values:

empathy + respect.
craft + innovation.
curiosity + resilience.
honesty + humor.
belonging + balance.

When I’m away from the daily hustle, you can catch me launching a sliders restaurant, running a small business, crafting brand identities and creative projects with my partner at Two Scoops Studio, building forts with my kids, or wondering if the Atlanta Hawks will get it done this year.

Truth in numbers

High-performing experience design teams bring high business value. My teams and I have launched multiple 0-1 revenue-generating products, improved efficiency in high-risk workflows to positively impact accuracy rates, introduced net-new approaches for design to influence roadmaps and product strategy, leveraged foundational insights with research and data partners to shift consumer security and risk behaviors, honed our definitions of what “success” means for both the user and the business, and have delivered an incredible amount of future-ready, extensible platform experiences.

We shifted a razor service into an award-winning brand product to rally behind.

We shifted quick service salad restaurants into a tech company featured in FastCo.

We mitigate risk, we increase adoption, we increase velocity. We add to the bottom line.

Some very nice people have said some very nice things about me.

  • From my manager

AK proactively digs into problems, asks thoughtful questions, and is not afraid to push back on cross-functional partners. She has a good sense of her team’s capabilities / bandwidth, and will jump in to assist with IC work in order to protect the team. She certainly showcases a strong commitment to high-quality results and a collaborative, psychologically safe environment. I continue to be confident in AK’s leadership of the Seller + Identity Platform team.

  • From my team

She’s always asking excellent questions that encourage me to find ways to break down ambiguity problems into smaller pieces, and get into tactical issues to get the job done. It really helps the team unblock work and resolve conflict. AK is the best hype woman someone could ask for in a manager, and it's one of her greatest strengths. Not only will she make you feel more confident in your abilities, especially when you're having doubts, but she'll also sing your praises to others. On more than a few occasions in the past year, while I was questioning or second-guessing my decisions, AK brought me back to earth and pointed out how I had changed the course of a project for the better and how I sometimes don't give myself enough credit. It's great to have someone like that in your corner.

  • From my partner

AK has been a patient thought leader through our continued product reorgs. She's helped us drive a team Identity (puns!) and proactively worked to help address gaps in our cross-functional operating model. AK is very collaborative, offering both targeted praise and critical feedback when needed. AK's feedback has been directly helpful to my assessment and management of talent on the PM team and has also helped me offer targeted coaching.

  • From my peer

AK has been a proactive design partner and a pleasure to work with. She is responsive to questions and anticipates the materials that UXR will need in order to prioritize projects and make key research decisions. AK continues to "look ahead" and loop in research early in design and decision making processes--which makes our job much easier. I appreciate her partnership with research, her responsive and proactive working approach, and the ownership she takes over her team's approach to working with UXR. She is a very supportive partner and truly dedicated to the Seller experience.
